This is a new offering from the Padilla line of smokes. I have been finding their new offerings hit or miss, but I was still looking forward to this one. The cigar presents well with a deep, brown wrapper that contains a nice oily sheen. The construction feels tight, but I do not detect any plugs or hard areas that would indicate a stem. The pre light aroma has notes of spice, earth and tobacco. The pre light draw is sweet and bready.
The cigar opens with a powerful blast of tobacco and pepper and I am shockingly reminded of the Don Pepin Garcia black label presentations, I am unaccustomed to these mixes of flavors and intensity from brands not made by Pepin. At the back of the palate a sweet bready texture is emerging and it is strange when considered against the power of the core notes. The draw is a bit tight for me, but it still produces acceptable amounts of smoke. The burn is sharp and the ash is thick and steady.
The first half of the cigar shows a nice profile shift at the one quarter point. There overwhelming notes of tobacco and pepper give way to a more refined, yet still robust, taste arrangement. There are notes of wood, tobacco and sweet bread. At the back of the palate there is a metallic tone that is hurting the impression. The burn is still acceptable and the draw is still a but tight.
The final half of the cigar is a bit disappointing for me, the initial power of the smoke never returned. The profile continues to show notes of wood, tobacco and sweet bread. At the back of the palate some metallic notes continue to detract from the experience. The draw stayed tight throughout, but did not hurt the score too badly. The burn was acceptable throughout.
The finish was short and showed notes of sweet bread and some metallic bite
Appearance- 92 a nice looking smoke
Taste- 82 the metallic notes killed this otherwise interesting profile
Construction- 83 the tight draw hurts the score
Strength- 85 full, then medium. I would have liked more power throughout
Overall- 84.5 just below average
