Punch Punch (June 2006 Box Date)

This is the long standing classic cigar of lore. I believe that it ranks with Montecristo #2's and Cohiba Siglos as the most sought after cigars in world. It is veiny and tawny and has a rough look to it. The pre light aroma is full of tobacco notes. The pre light draw is lightly floral and has notes of tobacco and citrus tickling the back of the palate. The construction seems to be acceptable upon inspection.

The cigar begins with a stronger blast of nicotine than what I was expecting, my tongue is numbing from the blasts. The core of the profile is intensely rich tobacco, there are some notes of leather that come through when taking smoke out of the nose. The burn and draw are excellent and the ash is a solid gray.

There is some further development about a quarter of the way into the cigar and I detect notes of citrus and leather. There are still notes of light tobacco mingled with a toasty quality at the back of the palate. The burn and draw have stayed strong and the cigar is performing well.

The final half of this cigar develops with notes of spice, citrus, floral essence and a nice tobacco undertone holds it all together. It is complex and has great depth in the profile.

The finish is shallow, but has flavors of tobacco and light spice that don't linger long enough.

Appearance- 85 not an attractive cigar
Taste- 94 a complex profile that shows nice depth
Construction- 89 a bit rough, but it performed well
Strength- 89 there was more here than I thought
Overall- 89.25 an above average smoke
