La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Miami Gran Corona Especial

Perhaps the longest name to ever grace a cigar, this smoke presents with a dull brown wrapper that appears in some spots to have an almost greenish look. There is prominent veining, but the wrapper appears to be applied well. The cigar is solid and firm, but not too firm. The pre light aroma is of cedar with a light dusting of roasted nuts. The pre light aroma has notes of pepper and spice.

The cigar opens with notes of sweet spice, not quite cinnamon but sweeter than nutmeg. The smoke is ample, largely credited to the easy draw. The burn is a bit uneven, but it is not causing any issues. The first inch and a half moves on in this uneventful fashion.

Just before the halfway point the profile develops a thin grassy note, there are also flavors of leather and spice. The burn has stayed uneven, but it is not causing any issues of note. The draw has remained easy to this point.

The final half of the cigar maintains a grassy note. There are also flavors of leather and spice, but the smoke lacks complexity and depth. The uneven burn leads to a bit of unravelling in the final two inches and the ash becomes a flaky mess. I don't relight and finish the smoke under duress.

The finish is thin and a bit off. There are grassy notes, but a nice flavor of leather and nuts.

Appearance- 87 not too bad, just lacking lustre
Taste- 83 could use more depth and complexity, but the flavors that are there are pleasant with the exception of the grassy notes
Construction- 82 the ending issues hurt the score
Strength- 85 an unremarkable medium
Overall- 84.25 an average smoke that would do well with more depth

Kristoff Corojo Matador

This is a gigantic cigar with an unappealing mottled wrapper that contains prominent veins. It is finished with a coiled, large pigtail cap. The foot is left shaggy which typically inhibits the draw. The pre light aroma is of earth, but there is a tinge of ammonia. The pre light draw is tight, but has hints of light spice.

The cigar opens with a very difficult draw, the profile is of light tobacco, but there is a vegetal note at the back of the palate. The ash is developing well and the burn is even. The wrapper has split and cracked just above the burn line.

At just before the halfway point a slight profile shift occurs. There are some floral notes with a light dusting of roasted nuts. There is a significant burn issue at this point in the cigar, a runner has developed. I smoke through it, but the draw remains stiff severely detracting from the experience.

The final half shows no further development. The draw opens a bit, but the profile stays the same. There were no further construction problems.

The finish is fair, with notes of earth and a floral essence.

Appearance- 77 unattractive
Taste- 80 just average, no complexity or depth
Construction- 77 inferior draw and one big burn issue
Strength- 80 medium
Overall- 78.5

La Escepcion 2009

This is an extension of the Hoyo De Monterrey line for 2009, it will only be available for a limited time. The cigar presents with a dark natural wrapper that is nearly a maduro in color. The pre light aroma is earthy and has a tone of light wood. The pre light draw is of tobacco and earth. An examination of the cigar leads me to conclude that it is well made.

The cigar opens with a profile of tobacco and earth, there is a slightly bitter note at the back of the palate that is off putting. The burn is developing well and the cigar produces ample smoke through a fine draw. The first third of the cigar progresses in the same fashion.

After the first third, but before the halfway point, there is a profile change. The core develops a nice solid leathery note with hints of tobacco and earth at the back of the palate and through the nose. There is still a bitter note present that is trying to be peppery, but it is coming up short. The construction, draw and burn all hold together well.

The final half maintains a core of leathery, earthy notes. There are hints of tobacco in the background, but the bitter note persists through to the end.

The finish is acceptable and smacks of tobacco and leather.

Appearance- 91 an attractive cigar
Taste- 83 bitter notes detract from the profile. More depth and complexity would definitely be a plus
Construction- 93 excellent draw and burn
Strength- 85 a sold medium/full presentation, but it does not compliment the profile well
Overall- 88 an acceptable smoke, but the taste (some would argue the most important component) is lacking

Ashton Aged Maduro No.15

This petit corona sized smoke presents with a dark maduro wrapper that has prominent veins and a firm feeling construction. The pre light aroma is full of coffee and tobacco notes. The pre light draw hints of pepper and coffee. The draw seems a bit tight in the pre light stage.

The cigar opens beautifully with notes of wood, coffee and earth. The burn is sharp and I am not having to labor with the tight draw at this point. Ample smoke is produced with each puff and I am lulled into the enjoyment of the opening salvo from this smoke.

At just past half way I am snapped out of my enjoyable reverie by a profile change. The cigar has taken on a medicinal quality. It is sour and metallic and the burn is becoming hot. The draw has lessened and become tighter. I believe I am near a flaw or a plug but I can't feel anything beneath the wrapper and I gently plumb the depths for signs of imperfection. I make the decision to smoke through it. There is little change, except that the cigar did cool back down. The medicinal and sour notes dominate the rest of the smoke.

The finish is short and bitter, I am disappointed everything started out so well.

Appearance- 85 veining hurt the score
Taste- 70 the first half was destroyed by the second half
Construction- 75 except for the tightening of the draw I could not find any flaws
Strength- 70 can't make a determination due to the horrible notes in the profile
Overall- 75 very disappointing

Benchmade for Ashton (by Pepin Garcia) Robusto

A new affordable offering from Ashton that is made by the biggest name in the business right now. The cigar presents with a mottled wrapper that seems a bit wet, but the cigar is finished with a short pigtail cap at the head that is an interesting twist. The pre light aroma is of earth and tobacco. The pre light draw had traces of tobacco, but spice and pepper are prominent.

The cigar begins with a slightly off putting sweetness that is accompanied by notes of mushrooms. The cigar does seem to be a bit wet as I also detect a moist bitterness in the smoke. The burn is passable and the draw is fine. The cigar develops a big bite of pepper about an inch in.

At the half way point the pepper notes have taken over, but there is still a note of mushrooms and vegetation at the back of the palate. The burn has remained consistent and the draw is still above average. There is ample smoke and some of the early moist, bitter notes have subsided.

The final half of the cigar takes on a sweeter character with a slightly floral essence, however the notes of mushroom continue to show through. The burn and draw have performed well throughout the smoke. I am finding this to be milder than a usual Pepin offering.

The finish is a bit short with notes of pepper, mushroom and sweet floral essence.

Appearance- 86 an OK appearance despite the mottled, leprous wrapper
Taste- 82 the profile was a bit weird and did not compliment all of the flavors well
Construction- 86 this was OK, but the draw was passable not exceptional
Strength- 85 a nice medium bodied smoke, but there was not enough oomph
Overall- 84.75 this was just OK, I will age some and review again at a later date

La Aurora South Beach

This is a limited edition release for the Florida market. I have smoked several in the past and always found them to be consistent. It presents in a torpedo vitola with a nice chestnut hue to the wrapper. There are some prominent veins, but the cigar seems to be constructed well as I detect no firm or soft areas. The pre light aroma is light and has hints of hard wood. The pre light draw is not remarkable, but I detect a lightly floral essence with notes of cedar.

The cigar begins with a profile of light tobacco and some hints of leather, there is a sweet cedar note at the back of the palate. The draw is superb, I am impressed with such a nice draw from a torpedo as I usually experience issues with this shape. The burn is sharp at the start and produces a crisp white/gray ash.

Just past a third of the way into the cigar it picks up a bit of steam in the strength department. There is a lacing nicotine note that becomes evident. The profile has a nice leathery core and there are still undertones of tobacco and cedar that are an interesting offset to the leather notes. I have encountered some issues with the burn at this point and there is a runner threatening to canoe up one side of the smoke. I am able to smoke through it without an issue and the cigar evens out a bit. The draw is still excellent.

The final half of the cigar continues to show leathery notes, there are cedary undertones and a light peppery spice at the back of the palate. There is another burn issue in the second half that requires a re-light, this is always disappointing late in a cigar because a re-light presents flavor profile problems for several minutes. I barely touch the cigar and lightly toast out the imperfection, the profile is not hindered badly by the experience.

The finish is a bit short and there are some bitter notes present, but there are leathery notes present.

Appearance- 88 an attractive cigar
Taste- 87 this was not bad, but lacked depth and complexity
Construction- 83 hurt by two construction issues
Strength- 85 a full offering, but it is not complimentary of the profile
Overall- 85.75 more depth and complexity would have helped. Construction issues hurt the score.

La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Churchill

This is a big, bold looking cigar with a dark nearly black wrapper that has a nice oily sheen. The wrapper is slightly veiny, but overall appears to be applied well. Upon inspection the construction appears to be acceptable, but there are some firm spots. The pre light aroma is of dark fruit and rich tobacco. The pre light draw is strong with notes of earth and heavy tobacco, there is a harbinger of nicotine to come.

The cigar opens with blasts of tobacco and nicotine, there is a prominent sour note to the opening that is detracting from the overall early experience. The draw is a bit tight, but the burn starts well, forming a gray ash that appears to be solid. There is little development through the first half of the cigar.

At the halfway point the nicotine and tobacco take center stage. The strength of the cigar cloys the profile and causes some problematic notes due to the numbing of the palate. There is a mixture of tobacco, earth and dark fruit flavors but dry vegetation is also present. The draw has remained tight, but the burn continues to perform well.

The final half of the cigar shows notes of pepper, dark fruit and spice. The depth just is not present though and the strength of the cigar overshadows some of the complexity that I expect from a cigar with an advanced profile of flavors. The draw is a little dead and I labor to produce acceptable amounts of smoke. The burn becomes slightly lopsided, but there are not any other issues of note.

The finish is fair and contains notes of pepper and dark fruit, the nicotine has stayed true throughout.

Appearance- 87 some veining hurt the score
Taste- 80 the profile was muddled by the strength, but there are some nice flavors present
Construction- 75 below average, draw problems diminished the performance
Strength- 77 a full plus presentation, but the strength deflects the complexity and depth of the profile in a negative way
Overall- 79.75 below average, but has some of the makings of a fine cigar

Partagas Decadas Limited Reserve 1998 No.II

A super premium offering from General Cigar, you can expect to pay top retail dollar for this cigar. The cigar presents with a nice looking wrapper that has plenty of tooth, but seems as though it may be a bit dry. An inspection of the cigar reveals a tight roll and there are several firm spots that may indicate plugs. I cut and take a tentative draw, there are no issues, I sigh a breath of relief. The pre light aroma is floral with notes of spice. The pre light draw smacks of ginger and spice.

The cigar opens with floral notes laced with spice and ginger. The ash is developing well with a dirty gray presentation. The draw is above average and the burn is likewise.

At somewhere between the third and halfway point there is a distinct profile change. Notes of pepper coupled with an unexpected blast of cedar are presenting in a unique way, I am undecided on whether it is pleasant or distracting. The burn and draw maintain to this point.

The final half of the cigar shows yet more pepper and develops further with a cedary undertone that continues to be unexpected. There are some wispy floral notes with hints of spice in the background. Burn and draw have remained solid.

The finish is a bit bitter, but there are notes of pepper and spice left on the palate.

Appearance- 87 a dry appearance detracts from the appeal
Taste- 88 the profile was unique, but not special for me
Construction- 92 I encountered no issues
Strength- 88 a nice medium/full presentation
Overall- 88.75 a nice smoke

La Gloria Cubana Serie R No.3 Maduro

This is a gigantic ring gauge smoke. As I have established in previous posts, big ring is not my thing, but I am going to give this a go anyway. The cigar is beautiful, the wrapper is dark (near black), there are few veins and no visible flaws. A light probing of the cigar yields no flaws and it appears to be well made. The pre light aroma is heady, with notes of coffee and rich tobacco essence. The pre light draw shows notes of rich earth, coffee and tobacco.

This cigar begins with a more mild profile than I remembered, or expected. There are fine notes of rich, full tobacco co-mingled with coffee and earth. The burn is sharp and the draw is excellent. A big white ash is forming and appears to be very solid.

The cigar continues to develop well through the first half and there is a deepening of the core flavors. Coffee, earth and tobacco continue to mingle pleasingly across the palate. The burn is sharp and the draw is still excellent, producing plenty of smoke.

The final half of the cigar picks up steam. There are notes of pepper and rich earth, there continues to be a light note of coffee on the back of the palate. The burn was excellent throughout and the draw was fine.

The finish is long and coats the palate with an array of peppery, earthy notes.

Appearance- 93 and excellent looking smoke
Taste- 91 surprising depth and flavor, but could use more complexity
Construction- 95 this was nearly flawless
Strength- 88 surprisingly medium in the beginning before strengthening at the end. I would have preferred the strength for the duration
Overall- 91.75 a surprising score for a surprising smoke

La Gloria Cubana Wavell Natural

I had not smoke one of these in nearly a decade, it is sometimes fun to revisit an old standby. The cigar presents with a light brown wrapper than has a slightly greenish appearance, it also seems as if it might be a bit dry. An inspection reveals that the construction should be acceptable, I detect no firm or soft spots and the cigar appears to be well made. The pre light aroma is grassy with light notes of earth. The pre light draw is slightly floral and grassy.

The cigar begins with some acrid notes. I detect hints of paper and grass, but there is a floral, earthy note at the back of the palate. The draw is nearly flawless and the cigar produces ample smoke. The burn develops well with a dirty gray ash.

At just past a third of the way into the cigar the papery and grassy notes dissipate and a nice core of floral and earthy flavors develops. There is also a slight note of coffee and the back of the palate and through the nose. The burn has stayed consistent and the ash is developing well.

The final half of the cigar sours a bit. There are still some pleasant floral notes, but the satisfying earthy flavor has given way to some grassy, vegetal notes. There is also some bitterness at the back of the palate that has a flavor of crushed aspirin. The draw and burn are still performing well.

The finish is a bit short with notes of grass and some bitterness.

Appearance- 84 the color of the wrapper detracts from the appeal
Taste- 82 this was hurt by the opening and closing notes
Construction- 93 a well made cigar that drew and performed well
Strength- 80 an unremarkable medium profile
Overall- 84.75 an average smoke

Camacho 10th Anniversary Edicion Limitada

This cigar is in a weird figurado configuration that is not symmetrical. The foot is narrow, the middle is oblong and the head is thicker that than the foot. The wrapper is a mottled brown, and there are flaws, veins and cracks down the length of the cigar. The pre light aroma is of light tobacco and raisin. The pre light draw has notes of citrus and spice.

The cigar opens with some notes of light wood, cedar and light spice. There is a metallic undertone at the back of the palate that is distracting. The burn is sharp and the ash is solid and white. The draw is perfect and produces big, booming clouds of smoke.

At the half way point the profile develops a floral quality with notes of raisins, however there is still a metallic flavor that is hurting the profile. The burn has stayed strong and the wrapper flaws are not affecting the experience.

The final half of the cigar does not change too much. The profile has maintained a character of raisins and has a floral essence. The metallic undertone is showing signs of turning bitter. The burn is still strong and the construction has stayed true despite my early misgivings.

The finish is short and has floral notes and a bitter undertone.

Appearance- 80 an unattractive cigar
Taste- 83 the metallic undertones hurt this score
Construction- 92 the cigar performs well, just a little unevenness
Strength- 84 a medium bodied smoke that does not compliment the character of the smoke
Overall- 84.75 just average for me

Liga Privada No.9

This is an offering from the boys at Drew Estate, this is an attempt at an actual cigar for them (note my derision, I do not approve of their usual infused, candy bar efforts). It presents well in a torpedo vitola with a dark, nearly black maduro wrapper. An inspection of the cigar reveals that it is soft and appears to be poorly made and maybe a bit too moist. The pre light aroma is floral. The pre light draw is tight and shows bitter, vegetal notes.

The cigar begins with a draw that is nearly too tight to continue smoking. The profile is dank and tastes of damp wood. The burn is acceptable. The first inch or so proceed in the above fashion.

At the half way point there has not been much change. There are muddled notes of coffee, earth and damp vegetation but none of them show through with any complexity, depth or notable character. The burn has stayed acceptable, but the draw is still tight.

The final half of the cigar recovers some, but damp vegetation is still detectable in the profile of earth and coffee. The draw was a struggle to the end, and the cigar continued to get softer and softer and I went on.

The finish was hot and bitter. There were notes of coffee and wet vegetation.

Appearance- 87 not a bad looking cigar, but the torpedo was a bit lopsided
Taste- 74 not a good profile and vegetal notes hurt the score
Construction- 71 a very poor example. Soft cigars that don't draw well are disappointing
Strength- 75 could not determine much in this category
Overall- 76.75 I would not buy this smoke

St. Luis Rey Serie G Robusto Maduro

This is a big, dark, log of a cigar. I typically don't find big ring gauge cigars visually stimulating, but the near black color and ruddy exterior of this one screams that it is a man's cigar. The cigar is bold and has heft that I am not accustomed to. The construction appears to be acceptable, big ring cigars make me nervous as I typically encounter some sort of problem while smoking them. The pre light aroma is of deep earth and rich, fragrant tobaccos. The pre light draw is spicy and full.

The cigar begins and is immediately booming thick, white smoke. The profile is in your face from the get go. There are notes of rich earth, tobacco and dark fruit. There is a slightly bitter note at the back of the palate, but it is nearly cancelled out by the rich flavors in the profile. The burn is sharp and the draw is flawless and produces more than ample smoke.

The profile does not change much throughout the cigar. There continues to be notes of earth and strong tobacco. There is still a flavor of dark fruit in the background of the profile and it adds an acceptable sweetness to the nearly overpowering notes of tobacco that are present. The burn is excellent and is producing a bright white ash that seems to hold forever (I had nearly three inches before I tapped it off).

The finish is much the same as the start, a rush of tobacco and earth. There is still some bitterness, but overall the cigar performed well.

Appearance- 89 an imposing dark cigar, it was a bit ruddy
Taste- 85 the cigar lacked depth, but had bold flavors
Construction- 92 I did not have any problems with this, other than some uneven parts
Strength- 87 a full bodied brute
Overall- 88.25 I would, and do, smoke this frequently

Tatuaje Reserva SW

This is a new offering from Johnson/Garcia and I had been waiting to try it, despite it's 11+ dollar price tag. The cigar itself is a beautiful vitola somewhat longer than a Churchill, but thinner than a corona gorda or toro. The wrapper is the color of creamed coffee and it is applied well. There are no issues at the seams and there are no flaws on the cigar. The pre light aroma is light and has essence of nuts and light spice. The pre light draw is pleasant, and has notes of light tobacco and spice.

The cigar begins with very mild notes of coffee and cream, there is a slightly floral undertone that is providing a nice sweet balance to the profile. The burn is excellent, but the draw is a bit tight for me. The cigar progresses in this manner for the first inch and a half.

Near the end of the first third the cigar has not picked up strength as I usually expect from a Johnson/Garcia product. Instead the mild nature of the cigar begins to show through even more prominently. There are satisfying notes of cocoa, light tobacco and roasted nuts. The burn has stayed even and the draw has perceptibly loosened.

The final two thirds of the cigar continue to show excellent mild/medium characteristics. The profile consists of roasted nuts, cocoa, light vanilla and light spice. The complexity is compelling, but some of the flavors lack depth. All in all the cigar shows a lot of character for something that is mild/medium. The burn and draw have maintained their superlative qualities.

The finish is smooth and almost silky. The palate is coated with notes of light tobacco and light spice that continue for several moments, tempting me to light another of the same cigar. I don't light another, but it is calling me back soon.

Appearance- 95 an excellent looking smoke
Taste- 93 surprising complexity, somewhat lacking depth
Construction- 95 nearly flawless
Strength- 91 a fine example of a mild/medium smoke. I would have liked the medium notes to come on sooner in the cigar for more depth and character
Overall- 93.5 do not let the price keep you away from this

Don Pepin Garcia My Father Robusto

This is a smart looking cigar with an oily, rich looking wrapper the hue of chestnuts. An inspection reveals that the construction should be near perfect, no soft spots or firm areas can be detected. The pre light aroma is rich and full of spice and tobacco notes. The pre light draw is a bit loose, but there are detectable traces of floral notes and a profile of tobacco.

The cigar opens with a profile of tobacco and light coffee, there is a floral undertone that offsets some of the early strength with some herbal sweetness. The burn is crisp and the smoke is voluminous as a result of the easy draw. The first third progresses in much the same way.

At just past the one third point the cigar takes on the character of a prize fighter, doling out blows of flavor and strength. There are rich tobacco notes with some essence of roasted coffee. There is a distinct nicotine tingle on the tongue. The construction is excellent and the loose draw is not detracting from the smoke.

The final half of the cigar is much the same. The construction is consistent and the strength is considerable.

The finish is smooth and has tobacco and coffee notes.

Appearance- 92 an above average looking smoke
Taste- 88 could use some more depth and complexity, but the simple profile has an elegant charm
Construction- 93 the draw was loose, but the cigar performed well
Strength- 90 a nice full smoke that compliments the profile well
Overall- 90.75

Alec Bradley Trilogy Authentic Corojo

This is the final review of the new Trilogy reblend. The cigar presents well with a rich brown wrapper, there is some prominent veining however and the wrapper seems like it might be a bit dry. The construction appears to be acceptable, with maybe a few spots that are firm. The pre light aroma is light and floral with a fruity undertone. The pre light draw has hints of spice and tobacco.

The cigar begins well with a light nutty character with a light hint of vanilla. The smoke is full and the ash begins to develop well. There is little change in the first half of the smoke.

In the second half a nice toasty character develops, there are hints of roasted nuts and spice. However, there are some vegetal notes that are becoming apparent in the profile and they are unpleasant. The construction has stayed acceptable and the burn is still nice.

The finish is short and vegetal and has papery notes. A disappointing end.

Appearance- 84 due to veining and dry feeling wrapper
Taste- 86 could use more complexity and the vegetal, papery notes hurt the score
Construction- 89 well constructed, but I did encounter some firm draws
Strength- 80 an unremarkable medium that did not compliment the cigar well
Overall- 84.75

Fuente Opus X Perfecxion X

I had this cigar in my humidor for well over a year just waiting for an occasion to give it a go. I typically only smoke an Opus once or twice a year so it seemed Labor Day was a perfect time to have one. The cigar is draped in cedar and I remove the sleeve gently. The wrapper is beautiful, but it has one flaw about an inch from the head I am hoping that it will not cause any issues as the smoke progresses. The pre light aroma is full of cedar and tobacco character. The pre light draw shows spice and citrus notes. The construction appears to be excellent.

The cigar begins with less power than I am typically accustomed to from these smokes. It has an almost timid beginning, with a profile that is of light tobacco and spice. The burn is crisp and the smoke is ample. The flavors maintain the above character for the first quarter of the cigar.

In the second quarter I detect some development of a citrus flavor, orange peel and some lemon zest. These flavors punch up the light tobacco flavors that are still present in the main body of the profile. The burn has stayed consistent and the smoke is still abundant and smooth.

In the final half the cigar really packs a punch. The strength intensifies to a full blown experience. The profile develops notes of rich tobacco flavor and some floral essence. The flaw in the wrapper does cause an issue and the last 2 inches of the cigar comes apart. I struggle through anyway and the profile is not hurt by the issues.

The finish is long and strong. There are notes of rich tobacco, leather and a citrus zest on the finish.

Appearance- 88 one flaw hurt the score
Taste- 91 a fairly complex and tasty smoke
Construction- 80 hurt by the eruption at the end
Strength- 89 a nice full profile cigar, but the strength overpowers some of the depth in the profile at the end
Overall- 87 somewhat disappointing, but still above average

Punch Punch (June 2006 Box Date)

This is the long standing classic cigar of lore. I believe that it ranks with Montecristo #2's and Cohiba Siglos as the most sought after cigars in world. It is veiny and tawny and has a rough look to it. The pre light aroma is full of tobacco notes. The pre light draw is lightly floral and has notes of tobacco and citrus tickling the back of the palate. The construction seems to be acceptable upon inspection.

The cigar begins with a stronger blast of nicotine than what I was expecting, my tongue is numbing from the blasts. The core of the profile is intensely rich tobacco, there are some notes of leather that come through when taking smoke out of the nose. The burn and draw are excellent and the ash is a solid gray.

There is some further development about a quarter of the way into the cigar and I detect notes of citrus and leather. There are still notes of light tobacco mingled with a toasty quality at the back of the palate. The burn and draw have stayed strong and the cigar is performing well.

The final half of this cigar develops with notes of spice, citrus, floral essence and a nice tobacco undertone holds it all together. It is complex and has great depth in the profile.

The finish is shallow, but has flavors of tobacco and light spice that don't linger long enough.

Appearance- 85 not an attractive cigar
Taste- 94 a complex profile that shows nice depth
Construction- 89 a bit rough, but it performed well
Strength- 89 there was more here than I thought
Overall- 89.25 an above average smoke

Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ Maduro Selecto

I reviewed the natural version of this vitola a couple of weeks ago and found that cigar to be excellent, reminiscent of a Cuban Bolivar. This cigar is the darker cousin in the Maduro format, it is also darker in character, the Jekyll to the previous cigar's Hyde. The cigar is pleasant to look at with a flawless triple seam construction. The wrapper is dark and rich, with a toothy quality. The construction feels firm, but I detect no issues upon examination. The pre light aroma is a melange of tobacco and woody notes. The pre light draw hints of spice and is well laced with a preview of nicotine.

The cigar begins with notes of cocoa and rich tobacco flavors, these are direct flavors and I do not labor to detect them. The burn is sharp and firm and the smoke is lacing the tongue with a nicotine tingle. The first two inches progress well and the cigar's performance is rock solid.

At just before the halfway mark a profile shift is afoot. There are notes of coffee, rich tobacco and exotic spice on the palate. The power of this cigar is sneaky and I can feel it creeping up on me, almost as if it is trying to be unnoticed. The burn stays solid and the cigar continues to deserve performance accolades.

The final third of this cigar shows all the character of a late round puncher. The are jabs of coffee, earth and tobacco with the uppercuts of nicotine. The burn has stayed true and the cigar is showing all sorts of character and poise.

The finish is excellent and the palate is sated with nicotine, coffee and tobacco flavors.

Appearance- 92 an attractive cigar
Taste- 90 well balanced and maintained, but could use some more depth
Construction- 96 nearly flawless
Strength- 92 an excellent, sneaky full bodied offering that could benefit with less punch in the finish
Overall- 92.5 another Pepin home run

La Riqueza No.4

This is a Pepin/Johnson offering that I had not smoked in some time. It is pricey for the size, but an elegant looking smoke. The wrapper is a beautiful medium brown presentation with few flaws, and the construction appears to be excellent. The pre light aroma is floral, with notes of light tobacco. The pre light draw hints of tobacco and spice.

The cigar begins with a smooth and easy draw that produces ample smoke. The profile is complex and has layers of depth. I am presented with flavors of roasted nuts, spice, tobacco, coffee and cocoa bean. These all compliment one another with flawless precision. The burn is superb, but the ash is a bit flaky.

This cigar continues to develop well and there are further notes of tobacco, cocoa and spice. There is a floral undertone that develops at the back of the palate during the smoke that offers a sweetness that is unexpected. The burn continues to be crisp while the ash remains flaky.

The finish is long and flavorful, with notes of rich tobacco and cocoa. There are also still some floral undertones that are complimenting the core of flavor.

Appearance- 93 an elegant appearance
Taste- 94 an excellent complex profile
Construction- 93 no issues, but the ash did not hold together well
Strength- 89 this is a medium/full offering, but could use some more power to compliment the complexity
Overall- 92.25 a superlative experience

Alec Bradley Trilogy Exotic Maduro

This cigar presents with a very dark maduro wrapper that is gleaming with oils. There is some prominent veining, but examination suggests that the cigar is well made. The pre light aroma is of dark fruit and there is a slight barnyard suggestion on the nose. The pre light draw is a bit tight, but hints of tobacco and earth.

The cigar begins with some tobacco and earth notes, but there is a metallic undertone that is slightly distracting. The burn is sharp and the ash is a dirty gray. There is no further development in the first half.

In the second half of the cigar the profile is muddled, but through the nose I detect some coffee character with notes of tobacco and earth. There is still a slightly metallic bite that is souring the profile. The burn has turned lopsided and there is small run in the burn.

The finish is short and hot, with notes of charred wood and paper.

Appearance- 86 veining hurts the score
Taste- 77 metallic notes detract from the profile
Construction- 85 minor issues are present
Strength- 83 a medium smoke that was unremarkable
Overall- 82.75 an average experience at best

Alec Bradley Trilogy Native Cameroon

This is a cigar that has been reshaped and re blended by Alec Bradley. It is a smart looking cigar with an oily Cameroon wrapper with few veins and no detectable flaws. The pre light aroma is of dark fruit. The pre light draw is of mellow wood notes and some citrus tang. The draw seems to be a bit loose, but the construction is seemingly acceptable.

The cigar opens with creamy and nutty notes that are mild and pleasing. There is a slight hint of a mineral undertone at the back of the palate. The burn is acceptable, but the draw is indeed loose. There is no further development in the first half.

The second half continues to show a core of nutty flavors and the mineral undertones have given way to a light dusting of spice. At just past the half way point it becomes very difficult to draw any smoke. The cigar has quit and I have to relight to stop from sucking nothing but air. Upon relight I can see that the tobacco is too loosely packed and now the cigar is hot and causing charred notes to present in the profile. This is a serious detraction from the cigar.

The finish is long and smooth with lingering notes of roasted nuts and light pepper.

Appearance- 93 an excellent looking cigar
Taste- 86 lacking in complexity and depth, but has a nice character
Construction- 74 the severe issues in the middle hurt this cigar
Strength- 90 a nice medium presentation
Overall- 85.75 poor construction hurt this severely

Bolivar Corona Extra (Box Date June 2006)

This is a fantastic vitola to behold. The cigar has a tawny color, but is slightly ruddy in appearance and has prominent veining. The pre light aroma is of cedar and has some leathery notes. The pre light draw is heavy with leather and earth. The cigar feels a bit firm, but the draw appears to be acceptable.

The cigar opens with some unexpected power, and the nicotine is tingling the palate. There is a fantastic core of leather flavors mingled with light earth and nutmeg notes. The burn is on the money and the ash is a dirty gray.

The cigar continues to develop extremely well and I detect notes of leather, earth, nutmeg, roasted nuts and graham cracker. By the half way point I am struggling to piece together the complexity that this relatively small cigar is showing. There is a minor run causing a lopsided ash and it detracts slightly from the experience.

The final half of the cigar mellows and I am still perplexed, but blown away by the complexity. There are notes of mellow wood, leather and earth coupled with a light pepper flavor that is touching the back of the palate. The burn has evened and the cigar performs well.

The finish is long and smooth. There are lingering notes of leather and mellow wood. The palate is coated with lingering thick flavors from the smoke.

Appearance- 91 prominent veining hurts the score
Taste- 99 nearly flawless profile with complexity and depth that is seldom, if ever, experienced
Construction- 87 the run hurts this score
Strength- 94 an excellent full bodied experience that compliments the cigar perfectly
Overall- 92.75 hurt by construction, but a transcendent taste experience

Alec Bradley Prensado

This is a new offering from Alec Bradley. The cigar is a beautiful presentation with a dark maduro wrapper the color of milk chocolate. There are almost no veins of any consequence and the cigar is supple and appropriately firm. The pre light aroma is of coffee with a slight barnyard undertone. The pre light draw is of cocoa and light wood.

The smoke opens with notes of coffee and black pepper, the pepper notes are near overwhelming and detract from the opening gambit. The burn is acceptable and a nice gray ash holds for a couple of inches before I have to quietly drop it in the tray. There is no further development in the first two inches.

The middle of the cigar develops with coffee and earthy notes that compliment each other well. There is a deep rich tobacco flavor at the back of the palate and the smoke is ample. A run develops that temporarily disrupts the burn, but I am able to smoke through it without issues. The cigar is otherwise performing well to this point.

The final third maintains it's core of coffee flavors, but there are notes of cocoa presenting themselves at the back of the palate. The burn has leveled off and the cigar continues with an above average performance.

The finish is long and contains notes of spice, cocoa and earth. There is a slightly sour note that appears, but it is not horrible.

Appearance- 92 an excellent looking smoke
Taste- 88 above average, but it was hurt by the sour notes and the peppery outburst at the outset
Construction- 86 the run in the middle hurts the score
Strength- 87 a nice medium smoke
Overall- 88.25 a solid above average performance
